Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training
Skills Training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
The focus of this training is to provide an introduction of DBT skills and an update on the use of these skills in service delivery. The overview of DBT is intended for mental health professionals & administrators who wish to acquaint themselves with the treatment. Prior knowledge of DBT is not required. The workshop should be particularly useful for those who are exploring whether learning DBT, to a standard of clinical proficiency, would benefit their own clinical skills and their clients suffering from complex disorders. This workshop can also be useful for both mental health providers and treatment court providers outside of mental health. This workshop can also serve as a useful tool for organizations who have implemented DBT to orient new or additional staff to the general structure and principles of DBT.
Description
This workshop will focus on Skills Training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment
that is increasingly being used in a variety of health settings. Comprehensive DBT has been found to have great practical utility for the reduction of violence and self-harm along with a variety of difficult-to-treat client problems. DBT Skills are an essential component of comprehensive DBT with evidence to suggest that skills alone, with case management, may be efficacious for less acute individuals. The primary focus of this workshop will be on the content and delivery of the skills component of DBT with emphasis on relevant adaptations for clients with behavioral health and substance use disorders.
The workshop includes didactic presentation with relevant case examples along with participant practice of DBT skills. This workshop will include discussion of strategies for successful implementation and interactive discussion with participants about the potential application of DBT Skills to their various settings/populations. Participants will learn how to apply and teach the effective DBT skills of Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation.
